Mendocino

A number of years ago I did a motorcycle trip up the California coast and spent two nights in Mendocino. Even at that time it seemed it hadn’t changed over the past decade since I’d last been there. I vowed to come back and photograph it. Photographing places you visit is tricky. The fact is many great photographers have taken many great shots of the place you’re visiting. My objective is to find shots that represent the unvarnished essence of the place–the way I see it with my eyes. I’m not looking for the post card shot or the book cover shot–I want to feel each shot and I want the shot to convey what I feel about the place. Maybe that is asking too much; but, it is a good goal. Click on any image to view the gallery as slideshow.

Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. Situated on almost 50 acres just north of Mendocino, this place is a gem. Its rich history is interesting, but it’s the more than 1,000 Rhododendrons and its hundreds of varietals that are most captivating. We were fortunate to hit the right time to see quite a variety of these. Also of note is the conifer garden which apparently is world renowned. The place is quite enjoyable, very low key, but very well tended and presented.
