Winter At Filoli

January 2022

While Winter technically starts in late December, I’ve chosen to keep the December images together for continuity (they can all be found in the Fall section). With the holiday lights down and the Christmas decorations stored away, the garden looked like a Winter garden. It was very peaceful and the crisp air fits with the leaf-less, meandering branches. There were a few things blooming and more still were trying to bloom. But, the structure or bones of the garden are what I’d hoped to capture in a compelling way during January and into February. February 2022

February is not typically the start of Spring. But. This year it seems to be. Everything is budding out and blooms are popping out everywhere you turn. One of the big events for Filoli during February is the Orchid Show. I took so many images, the show gets its own page. The gallery thumbnails may look a bit funny on your screen. I started using another camera for some of my images and the aspect ratio of that format is different. Click on an image to view a slideshow.

About this project: 45 Minutes At Filoli

This project originated because my wife and I were looking for a pandemic-friendly afternoon outdoors and we visited Filoli in Woodside, CA. Spring had just begun to coax the blossoms and blooms along and I thought it might be fun to revisit the gardens every week and create a pictorial record of the changes. I decided on two guidelines. First, get in and out in 45 minutes to an hour. Second, go ultra-light by picking a lens from my old lens collection and sticking with that throughout my visit. Mostly, sometimes, I was able to stick with these guidelines. While my visits often stretched longer, trying to keep things simple and work fast gave the project an energy I enjoyed.
