45 Minutes At Filoli Project: How It Began

This project began when my wife and I were looking for a pandemic-friendly afternoon outdoors and we visited Filoli in Woodside, CA. Spring had just begun to coax the blossoms and blooms along and it occurred to me that it might be fun to revisit the gardens every week and record the changes. As a member I could get in an hour early on Saturdays. I came up with two guidelines I wanted to follow. First, get in and out in 45 minutes to an hour. Second, go ultra-light by picking a lens from my old lens collection and sticking with that throughout my visit. Mostly I adhere to these guidelines….

March 2021

March was the right time to start this project with so much coming alive in the gardens. I will remember March for the profusion of Daffodils and Tulips. Wow! The amount of both and the variety of both were stunning. There can’t be too many places in the world with displays this breathtaking. Click on an image to view a slideshow.

April 2021

I will remember April for the explosion of color. Colors popping everywhere and so much changing from week to week. It was sad to see the tulips start to turn, but that presented an opportunity to capture the tulips aging as an obvious metaphor (or more literally as just an interesting set of textures). May 2021

The first days of May continued the explosion of colors everywhere. The 45 minutes to an hour that I wanted to limit my shooting to often stretch longer and longer. There was so much life everywhere, it was hard to know what to shoot. Click on an image to view a slideshow.
